This formal network of 113 improved cookstove producers and 198 distributors is the biggest – in fact the only – there is in Cambodia. From production facilities in Kampong Chhnang province, the New Lao Stove and Neang Kongrey Stove – now widely-recognized brands of stoves each with a unique Quality Control number etched on the stove’s mouth, and the distinctive ICOPRODAC “QC passed” label – traveled on ox- and moto-driven carts along this network and across the length and breadth of the country and into the homes of more than 1.3 million Cambodians. Since its inception in 2003, ICOPRODAC has produced and sold a total of 3.5 million units of improved cookstoves.
Now 10 years after they were founded, they celebrate their survival and accomplishments, but more importantly, they gather together to articulate a new vision and chart a new path for the organization’s continued relevance and growth in the years to come.
With financial assistance from the blue moon fund whose work in the Greater Mekong sub-region supports conservation of rich landscapes by exploring alternatives to the traditional model of resource-heavy development, ICOPRODAC, under the guidance of GERES, explored both their strengths and weaknesses as an organization, with a view to setting ICOPRODAC’s direction towards becoming an independent, robust and relevant industry association that is capable of protecting and advancing the interests of ICS producers and distributors, of upholding the quality standards of the ICS sector, and of engaging with public and private institutions for the benefit of ICOPRODAC members and the ICS sector as a whole.
Following two meetings by the 15-member Executive Committee in Phnom Penh and Kampong Chhnang in November and December 2014, respectively, a General Assembly will be convened on December 18th in Kampong Chhnang province, during which the Executive Committee shall present to the 311members-strong body its vision and recommendations. The conversation will include topics such as quality assurance and control; access to finance; training and capacity building, including of incoming members; sales monitoring and intelligence; marketing and promotion activities; new services that ICOPRODAC could provide for its members, etc.
The General Assembly will be followed by a dinner party celebrating the organization’s 10th year.
